Benefits of Metal Roofing

Durability and Longevity

One of the most significant advantages of metal roofing is its durability. It is made from high-quality materials such as steel, copper, zinc, and aluminum that withstand extreme weather conditions including rain, snow, and high winds. Metal is also resistant to fire, mold, and mildew.

Aesthetic Appeal

Metal roofing has a distinct architectural appeal, making it a great choice for builders, designers, architects, universities, and homeowners alike.

Low Maintenance

Compared to other roofing materials, metal roofing requires minimal ongoing maintenance. Metal roofing is designed to be leak-proof, resistant to weather elements, and resilient against common roofing issues such as deterioration, cracking, and leaking.

The life cycle cost of a metal roof is significantly less than traditional asphalt roofing. For example, over a 75-year life cycle, a metal roof will not need replacement (given correct installation), whereas an asphalt roof will need to be replaced 3-4 times in that same amount of time.

Types of Metal Roofing

Snap-Lock Profiles

Snap-Lock profiles are one of the most common metal roofing systems. These profiles work as they sound, with female and male legs snapping together to create the “standing seam” look.
These metal roofs are among the easiest to install. However, these profiles are not ideal for low slopes due to the seams only being held together by pressure. They are not watertight and should only be used on slopes with a lower rise than 4” per foot.

Mechanical Lock Profiles

Mechanical Lock profiles are a true standing seam roof profile. This type of roofing requires special locking tools to lock the panels together. The two types of mechanical lock profiles are single lock and double lock.
These metal roofs require more attention to detail and expertise to install correctly. Special expansion clips are required to allow for the expansion and contraction of the metal. These profiles are ideal for low slope roofing as the locked seam resists water intrusion.

Batten Seam Profiles

Batten Seam Profiles involve placing a pre-made cap over adjoining panels, creating the raised seam. This is a traditional roofing method that is often used for historical restoration.

Metal Shingles

Metal shingles have gained popularity in recent years due to their unique yet robust designs. These types of metal roofs are typically manufactured by companies such as Prefa Aluminum and come in a variety of styles. Metal shingles offer the aesthetic appeal of traditional shingles combined with the durability and longevity of metal, making them an excellent choice for residential properties.
